Dental Assistant Training Program and Medical Assistant Training Program (An Introduction to the Medical Field)

These programs are made possible for military sponsored ID card holders over 18 years of age through a partnership with the American Red Cross, DENTAC and Evans Army Community Hospital. Programs are subject to military personnel’s availability to teach. Dental assistants aid the dental operator provide more efficient dental treatment. This program provides each student with quality assistant training through classroom study and hands on learning within a dental clinic. Medical assistants are part of the administrative aspect of healthcare who perform administrative and clinical tasks to support the work of medical doctors and other health professionals. During the training, students will learn basic skills for working in an out-patient clinical environment. There is an application process for each of these programs.

Disaster Relief Assistance

When a disaster occurs, residence are eligible to apply for disaster relief assistance from the Pikes Peak Chapter of the American Red Cross. Call the Pikes Peak Chapter at 719-632-3563 (24/7). Disaster relief assistance is always provided as an outright grant.

Emergency Communication Messages

In the event of a family emergency, contact the Red Cross immediately. The purpose of Red Cross communications is to provide service members and their commands with complete, accurate, and verified information describing the circumstances of a family emergency. Please have the service member’s name, rank, Social Security Number, and military unit address. Presentations/Briefings on American Red Cross services provided to Active Duty, FRG and Command. Training on Emergency Communication Messages defines an emergency, details what is needed to start a message, provides examples of possible message content.

Red Cross Health and Safety Course

The American Red Cross offers training in CPR, AED, first aid, and babysitting. Instructor training is also available. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767) or visit them online at www.coloradoredcross.org for a list of courses and to register.

Red Cross Summer Youth Volunteer Program

The American Red Cross Fort Carson Station has a youth volunteer program for ages 14-17 years old. This program runs through the summer from the end of the school year to the beginning of the school in the fall. Once the youth completes the summer program, their volunteering can continue throughout the school year. To join the program, each youth is required to complete an application and interview process. This gives the youth an opportunity to see a field in the medical career that may be of interest to them for their future vocation. Applications are available during the month of May.

The Community Information and Referral Program provides information on available resources and services for Department of Defense identification (ID) card holders. This program links together local, state and federal recourses.

Army Family Action Plan (AFAP)

The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) identifies and recommends solutions to Soldier and Family generated issues that affect the quality of life of the total Army family. An annual conference is held at Fort Carson each fall. Members of the community become involved in the AFAP Conference by serving as delegates, volunteer facilitators, recorders and administrative assistants.

The Fort Carson Army Volunteer Corps (AVC) can connect you with various volunteer opportunities throughout the installation and community. Family Member Newcomer Orientation

The Family Connection is a place for families to gather information on Fort Carson and the Colorado Springs community, to meet new friends, to borrow household items from the ACS loan closet and to find out how to make the most of the Mountain Post. The Family Connection maintains a family-friendly facility for Soldiers and Family Members. It is designed specifically for transitioning Families.

Family Readiness Training

Mobilization and Deployment Readiness assistance is provided for active duty, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers and their families. The Family Readiness Program assists units and their families in preparing for deployment. Operation READY predeployment briefings are scheduled through individual units. Family Readiness Group (FRG) Leader and Rear Detachment training are conducted on a regularly scheduled basis. Training ensures that leadership is prepared for the challenges that may arise due to mobilization and deployments. Family Assistance Information forms are available to Reserve and National Guard Soldiers during the Soldier Readiness Program process. Information such as family members, spouse, next-of-kin, special needs, medical problems, identification card and pay options are collected. Forms are mailed to the Family Member’s closest military installation and are used to facilitate assistance while the Soldier is deployed.

Financial Counseling

This program assists Soldiers and their families to live within their means and invest for the future. Army Emergency Relief (AER) provides emergency loans to Soldiers in crisis. Assisting Soldiers and their families to live within their means and invest for the future includes mandatory first term Soldiers training, establishing budgets, working with creditors, providing tax/investment consumer information, filing consumer complaints, providing information on local consumer laws and teaching financial management skills.

Fort Carson Mayor Program

The Fort Carson Mayoral Program was established to enhance the quality of life for residents of the installation. Each village has an elected/appointed Mayor and Deputy Mayor which act as community liaison, representing the village and residents. They promote self-sufficiency for military families, showing the community “how to” rather than “to do for”.

Interviewing Skills and Education

The Employment Readiness Program provides assistance and self-development workshops to military families. ACS understands the mobile lifestyle of the military community, the effects and restrictions that it has on Army spouses or dependents searching for employment and career advancements. This program is designed to assist the military family in finding and securing employment. Information is available on civil service appropriated fund employment; non-appropriated fund employment in recreation facilities, childcare and other areas; government agencies including state, city and county; contract positions within Fort Carson and the community; and local companies in the surrounding communities. Home-based parenting education program. Services are provided by trained professionals who help families improve parenting skills on a variety of topics, such as coping with stress, helping children stay connected with deployed parent, effectively handling sibling rivalry, increasing knowledge of child development, and learning effective child discipline techniques.

The Soldier and Family Readiness Program promotes individual, couple and family wellness by offering a comprehensive program that includes awareness, education and support to prevent family violence. Army Emergency Relief (AER)

Emergency Financial Assistance

Army Emergency Relief (AER) provides emergency financial assistance to Soldiers (active and retired), and their dependents, when there is an established need. Assistance is available for food, rent, utilities, emergency travel, vehicle repair and funeral expenses. AER also gives undergraduate level education scholarships, based primarily on financial need, to children of active duty and retired Soldiers. AER cannot help pay for nonessential items; finance ordinary leave or vacation; pay fines or legal expenses; help liquidate or consolidate debt; assist with home purchases or improvements; help purchase, rent or lease vehicles; cover bad checks or pay credit card debt. Army Public Health Nursing (APHN)

Flu vaccines are provided at no cost to beneficiaries by a TRICARE-authorized provider or by a network pharmacy participating in the vaccination program.

HIV Notification and f/up and briefings

Preventive Medicine conducts notification of Soldiers with confirmed HIV infection. Periodic medical f/up required for HIV staging is coordinated through PM. Quarterly HIV Briefings for units and selected employees are available upon request.

STI Information

Preventive Medicine is responsible for tracking the rates of STIs in the Fort Carson Community. Infected personnel are referred to public health nurses and medical providers for further testing, treatment and case interviews to ensure partners also receive treatment.

Specialty Care Services - IOP

The Intensive Outpatient Program treatment is primarily for Active Duty Service Members (SMs) who have not made adequate progress in routine outpatient behavioral health treatment and are in need of more robust, intensive treatment without the restrictions of a psychiatric inpatient setting. IOP also provides care for SMs that have been recently discharged from inpatient treatment and need more intensive therapy than what can be provided in a weekly outpatient setting.

Department of Surgery Clinics

In general, services in the Department of Surgery Clinics are by Primary Care Manager (PCM) referral. Some of the services available are: bariatric surgery, colon cancer screenings, vasectomies, chiropractic and acupuncture services for active duty, management of the back classes, routine eye exams. In addition to services generally available in a MEDDAC, the Department of Surgery also offers LASIK/PRK surgery for active duty, a women's' breast clinic, pain services for active duty, total joint replacement.

Drug Disposal

Most unused and unneeded pharmaceuticals can be disposed in special drop boxes located at the pharmacy. This removes potentially harmful medications from the home and provides environmentally safe disposal. Contact the Pharmacy for any special concerns.

The Warrior Recovery Center provides a team approach centered on you, in which you hold the key to your success. We Teach Traumatic Brain Injury (Brain Injury/Concussion) patients lifelong skills through interdisciplinary treatment and encourage patients to better manage their own symptoms and improve their quality of life. Weight Management

Army MOVE! Geared for the Active Duty Soldier who is enrolled in the Army Weight Control Program (AWCP) or for a Soldier who is seeking information to help maintain a healthy weight and/or feels they are close to failing their body fat standards. Sessions focus on general weight loss principles, and the latest trends and concepts in weight management. Initial class offered Mondays at 1300 hours in the Nutrition Education Center at EACH.

Wounded Warrior Ombudsman Program

The Wounded Warrior Ombudsmen serve as a local resource, facilitator, and problem solver for Service Members and their Families. Ombudsmen are located in the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and serve as a liaison between MEDCOM, the Soldier and Family member, the MTF commander, and the Warrior in Transition Unit (WTU) commander. The Ombudsman assists WTU and non-WTU Soldiers and their Families with medical related issues. The Wounded Soldier Family Hotline (WSFH) [(800) 984-8523] serves as a 24/7 resource to any beneficiary seeking assistance with a medical issue/concern including wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers, and military Caregivers. Department of Public Works (DPW)

Environmental Compliance Assessment Team (ECAT)

The DPW Environmental Division ECAT mission is to provide support to units, garrison directorates and tenants with needs as they relate to environmental compliance and management. The ECAT conducts assessments of all facilities in concert with unit Environmental Protection Officers in order to protect the Installation from unnecessary fines and environmental violations by assessing facilities on an annual, biannual, quarterly and monthly basis.

Environmental Program

The DPW Environmental Division manages the Asbestos, Lead and Toxics Program. There are asbestos-containing building materials throughout most of the older buildings on Fort Carson and Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. Additionally, some facilities may have lead-based paint, radon and polychlorinated biphenyls. The DPW protects the environment while ensuring that there are no exposures to Soldiers or civilians.

Environmental Services

DPW Environmental Division promotes a healthy urban and down range forest community through an integrated management approach. The program focuses on ensuring that Fort Carson is sustaining the urban forest by maintaining the trees within the Cantonment Area. Additionally, Fort Carson manages the down range forest resource for ecosystem health and function. Effective forest management supports the military training mission by improving visibility, maneuver and concealment.

Facility Engineering Requests

Work orders are processed through customer service representatives at the DPW Business Operations and Integration Division, Customer Service Branch. Work Orders, or Facilities Engineering Work Requests (DA Form 4283), are typically for maintenance and repair projects over the limits of a service order or for any new construction requirements.

Furnishings

The DPW Master Planning Division Furnishings Warehouse is responsible for the issuing new furniture the turn-in of unserviceable furniture for permanent units and directorates on Fort Carson.

Hazardous Waste Storage Facility

The DPW Environmental Division manages a Hazardous Waste Storage Facility, Bldg. 9246, which handles hazardous waste for units and activities on the Installation.

Installation Restoration Program

The DPW Environmental Division Installation Restoration Program has an ongoing commitment for the cleanup and restoration of past and present contaminated sites on Fort Carson and Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. Such sites include impacts from formerly leaking underground storage tanks, various releases of contaminants and non-active landfills that all require remediation.

Pest Control

The DPW Operations and Maintenance Division manages a pest control program, which provides inside and outside pest control.

Recycling

The DPW Operations and Maintenance Division maintains an active Recycle Program to help with the Installation’s goal to achieve Net Zero waste. Fort Carson maintains four recycle drop-off locations that accept cardboard, mixed paper (white paper, newspaper, magazines, shredded paper, junk mail, etc.) aluminum, tin, plastic and glass. The Exchange drop off location also accepts electronics, porcelain, batteries and old mattresses. Electronics accepted include computers, cell phones, DVDs, TVs and other devices. There is a limit of one CRT TV (32” or smaller) or one flat screen TV (48” or smaller) accepted per family. (Only personal, non-government, electronics will be taken.)

The DPW Operations and Maintenance Division is in charge of Installation snow removal efforts.

Utility Locator and Dig Permits

The DPW Operations and Maintenance Division provides permits supporting all construction, to include utility outages, utility locates and construction water.

Weeds

The DPW Environmental Division is responsible for the inventory, control and monitoring of invasive species (including noxious weeds) at Fort Carson and Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. For issues with common weeds such as dandelions see the Pest Management section.

Wetlands

The DPW Environmental Division manages both jurisdictional and non-jurisdictional wetlands at Fort Carson and Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. Wetlands management protects wetland values in accordance with numerous federal regulations.

Wildland Fire Program

The DPW Environmental Division promotes a healthy forest community through an integrated management approach to wildfire suppression and prescribed fire on Fort Carson and Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. The program focuses on protecting and improving training lands, by using a natural fire regime. The Wildland Fire Program also provides education and outreach to adjoining communities and landowners.

Vehicle Registration

To register a vehicle on FT. Carson military personnel, family members, and DOD civilian employees need to bring their DOD (i.e. CAC, Retired ID, family member ID), vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and drivers license to the Vehicle Registration Office BLDG 6012. If you are a contractor you also need to provide a letter of employment.

Weapons Registration

To register a weapon on FT. Carson military personnel and family members need to complete FT. Carson Form 66-E and have it signed by the service members commander. Civilian employees, retirees and non-DOD affiliated civilian personnel need to complete FT. Carson Form 66-E, The forms need to be brought to BLDG 6012 and it will be processed. DO NOT BRING ANY WEAPONS TO THE VEHICLE REGISTRATION OFFICE.

Warrior Adventure Quest

Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ) is an Army RESET training tool designed to introduce Soldiers to activities that serve as alternatives to aberrant behaviors often associated with accidents involving recently re-deployed Soldiers. This tool presents coping outlets to help Soldiers realize their own new level of normal after deployment and "move on" with their lives. WAQ combines existing MWR Outdoor Recreation high adventure activities (e.g. rock climbing, mountain biking, paintball, scuba, ropes courses, skiing, zip lines, white water rafting, and others) with a leader-led after action debriefing (L-LAAD) tool developed by Army Medical Department (AMEDD) center and school. Program consists of Leader training for SSG and above in participating platoon, soldier training for all participants, pre and post activity surveys, full day adventure program, and leader led after-action debrief. Program designed to provide healthy outlets for adrenaline seeking, build unit cohesion, reinforce resiliency techniques, introduce soldiers to new activities.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a tool to communicate the status of local air quality to the public—the Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI is derived from real-time air pollution measurements taken at monitoring stations throughout the United States. The AQI has three components: a color, a score and a health message recommending protective action based on the level of air pollution.

State Environmental Health Laboratory

State Environmental Health Laboratory supports statewide environmental health protection monitoring by performing analyses for chemical, microbiological, and radiological testing, biomonitoring of water, wastewater, air, soil, hazardous wastes, and other environmental concerns. State's environmental health laboratories are associated with that state’s public health laboratory.

State Epidemiologist

State Health Department Lead State Epidemiologist is appointed as responsible for the identification and response for all health threats that occur within that state. This individual is selected by each state’s primary health official (usually the state health department director), or the state board of health. A state epidemiologist is usually responsible for each state’s infectious disease epidemiology program, often along with many other state health agency programs involved in disease detection and prevention.

State Public Health Laboratory

State Health Department Laboratory that conducts laboratory testing for most all analysis requirements for public health surveillance. The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Program provides victim advocacy services, support information, resources, and referrals for adult victims of sexual assault. The SAPR Program also coordinates emergency medical care and counseling services as needed or requested. This program is not only available to victims of sexual assault but also to anyone within the military community who might be interested in sexual assault prevention and education . The Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) is a "one stop shop" providing support and resources to Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) Soldiers and their families. Soldiers assigned to WTB are in the process of recovering from being wounded, and will transition back into their former unit, or transition out of the Army. The SFAC provides assistance with financial counseling, employment , education, community programs, social services, child and youth programs, Veteran's Affairs (VA) and ACAP

The Exceptional Member Program (EFMP), working in concert with other military and civilian agencies, is designed to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, multiagency approach for community support, housing, medical, educational, and personnel services to families with special needs. An Exceptional Family Member (EFM) is a Family member, regardless of age, with any physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education, training, or counseling.

On Post only shuttle service picks up passengers within 10 minutes at any designated stop. Service is a circulator; there is no “schedule”. Service to/from gate 4 is on call basis. Call 526 - 6453 for Gate 4 pick up, and for general questions. This service is provided for Soldiers, DOD Civilians and Dependents (on a space available basis). Persons 17 years of age may ride alone. Children 13 and over may ride with a 17 year old. Children 12 or younger must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Child restraints, including car seats for infants and children, are the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Car seats are not provided.
